Peter Waldo (1140-1205) was the founder of the Waldensians, a group that claimed to descend from the Apostles and not the Catholic Church. He commissioned the first translation of the Bible into the spoken language of the common people. Although he was originally wealthy, he gave up his money to preach a simple godly life.
